Hearing that one of our annual Broken Frontier ‘Six to Watch‘ creators has been picked up by a publisher is always an absolute joy for us here at Broken Frontier Towers. So the news from Soi Books that the incredibly talented Shuning Ji from our 2025 group will be illustrating Cimarron (The Wild One), their graphic biography of explorer and UK Chief Scout Dwayne Fields, couldn’t make us happier.
When we made this year’s Six to Watch announcement I said of her work then that “when I sampled my first Shuning Ji comic last summer I knew instantly that she was on the Six to Watch list for 2025.” The comic in question was My Mum is a Wolf which was reviewed here at BF in 2024. And, just to back up what a prospect she is, Shuning was also part of the SelfMadeHero Graphic Anthology Programme, contributing to that excellent initiative’s anthology Catalyst. You can also read an interview with her here at BF.
Check out the press release for the book below, alongside some early art and character designs. And, most crucially, sign up to be notified when the Kickstarter goes live here.
Dwayne Fields Launches Powerful New Graphic Novel
Cimarron (The Wild One)
A bold journey of identity, adventure, and reclaiming your wild self — brought to life by a world-class creative team
Explorer, broadcaster, and Chief Scout Dwayne Fields FRGS unveils Cimarron (The Wild One), a cinematic new graphic novel inspired by his life. Launching exclusively on Kickstarter, the story explores survival, belonging, and the strength it takes to be yourself in a world that often demands otherwise.
At its core, Cimarron follows a boy uprooted from Jamaica’s lush rainforests and dropped into the cold streets of North London. Suppressed and disconnected, he begins a soul-stretching journey across deserts, oceans, and polar ice — not to escape, but to reclaim his true self.
“Sometimes the greatest adventures begin with finding your way back to yourself.”
— Dwayne Fields
The word Cimarron comes from the Spanish cimarrón, historically used to describe people who escaped bondage to live freely — a powerful metaphor for rediscovering one’s inner wildness.
