THOUGHT BUBBLE MONTH 2026! While the text of Letty Wilson’s Sgadanach is presented in Scots and Scottish Gaelic (Gaidhlig), it’s a narrative designed to be entirely readable for those who speak only English. There’s a translation of the folk songs that make up its textual element at the back of the comic but it’s something that complements what precedes it. Not a necessary reference point to keep flipping forwards to.
In Sgadanach Wilson (aka Toadlett) introduces us to four folkloric entities in anthropomorphised forms (based on ideas of the Sea Hag the Cailleach from Scottish legend). These entities are shown fishing for herring from a rocky promontory in the sea; their singing of the two songs working as an accompanying backdrop to their actions. What they set in motion and create from their catch here, however, will soon have significant repercussions for the locals in a nearby fishing village…
This is a minicomic so it falls into that category of work that is difficult to discuss in great depth without giving the entire plot away. What can be acknowledged, though, is how successfully it juxtaposes ideas of the mythical with a more recognisable human reality, as two worlds converge with a strange kind of charm, and not a tiny amount of wit.
As ever, Wilson’s art is a major draw here. Detailed, fluid and with some clever arrangements in terms of page structures to give different perspectives on the same sequences. There’s also some accomplished character design too when it comes to the supernatural entities of the comic which Wilson elaborates on in the back of Sgadanach.
With a cover that ranks right up there as one of my favourites in comics in 2026 this is a beautifully illustrated 20-ish pages of comics and a worthy introduction to Wilson’s practice for those yet to discover their work.
