Longer-term Broken Frontier readers may remember some of our coverage of the deliciously bad taste humour of comics artist Krent Able on the site in the past. I said here of his satirical interpretations of pop cultural faves like Nick Cave, Morrissey, Goldfrapp et al. in his Big Book of Mischief that “work as wonderfully and gloriously offensive as this is a rare and cherished treat indeed” and described his collaboration with Julian Hanshaw last year in BadTwin Presents as “unashamedly unapologetic… crude, lewd and raucous” (in the best way imaginable of course…).
At the end of 2016 Able (aka artist Steve Martin) teamed up with director Matt Harlock for the documentary short Ink, Cocks & Rock ‘n’ Roll that explored the strange divide between Martin and that odd malevolent presence known as Krent Able. Again, I said here at BF that I “was captivated by its tongue-in-cheek approach to its subject. It’s one that plays up the Jekyll and Hyde conceit at its heart to bleakly comedic effect while still proving informative and enlightening about Able’s creative process. With contributions from the likes of Paul Gravett, Julian Hanshaw and Shaky Kane the film is also an examination of his journey into the comics world to date.”
That short film is now available to watch in its entirety here…
All done? Splendid wasn’t it? In an entrancingly disquieting kind of way. So let’s move on to the meat and gristle of this extra entry in our semi-regular ‘Crowdfunding Corner‘ pieces.
Following on from that above collaboration Harlock and Able are working together on a new project – an intriguing horror film concept entitled Deep Clean for which they’re currently crowdfunding. Here’s the Kickstarter video…

And here’s the press release details to give you more of an idea of a project we think you should be backing, even if its comics links are a little more tangential this time round.
What if the council road crews you see causing traffic jams every day were not what you thought? 16-year-old horror fan Alex has to spend the week with his loser Uncle on a boring work placement. What he doesn’t know is that Deep Clean is a secret council unit whose job is…blocking up demon portals.
Imagine a horror film set in a world created by Mike Leigh.
We are working with Ben Wheatley collaborator Dan Martin on the SFX, and the team behind Ghost in the Shell & Bladerunner 2049 on the VFX.
SFX: Dan Martin at 13FingersX
(Sightseers, Highrise, Free Fire, Alien Covenant)
VFX: Territory Studio
(Ghost in the Shell, Guardians of the Galaxy, Ex Machina)
Exec producer: Mike Chapman, Kaleidoscope
(Prevenge, A Dark Song)
Deep Clean is a supernatural comedy horror, in the vein of films like Trollhunter, Shaun of the Dead and Attack the Block.
Deep Clean has a week to go and it’s made around two thirds of its target but still needs that extra push to see it to the finish line. These two gents proved with their last film partnership that they have the deviously dark and triumphantly twisted imaginations to make this something special. Don’t forget to Back the Kickstarter here!
Above and below is a little more in the way of concept art to whet your appetites…
