We’ve passed the midway point and our seventh Gosh! Comics and Broken Frontier Drink and Draw of 2018 is imminent! And, as will not surprise regular attendees, we have a fabulous line-up of guest artists with us on Thursday July 26th. Creators David Biskup, Bethany Hall and Will Powers join us for our regular monthly meet-up, sponsored by Cass Art.
You can find us upstairs in The King’s Arms on Poland Street and your co-hosts for the night are myself (Broken Frontier Editor-in-Chief Andy Oliver) and Gosh’s very own Nora Goldberg. The fun begins at 6.30pm at Gosh! on Berwick Street before we head off for our sketching and drinking antics at 7pm. Don’t forget you can join the official Facebook event here.
A quick intro to this month’s artists…
David Biskup has contributed to street press anthology Off Life and been a part of the Jazz Dad Books line-up. His versatile storytelling skills have lent themselves to a wide range of subject matter with his graphic medicine offering Seagram – juxtaposing the work of artist Mark Rothko with an exploration of living with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder – being much acclaimed. We reviewed it here at BF praising the way Biskup “brings us directly into the experience of living with the effects of PTSD without overt exposition but through pure visual storytelling.”
One of his most recent minicomics details Barack Obama’s poignant farewell to his Twitter account in the aftermath of the 2016 Presidential Election. You can see a review of @potus here today at BF.
Our next two contributors’ work you may well have discovered for yourselves if you visited the South London Comic and Zine Fair a week or so ago. Bethany Hall is the artist behind Cosmo Hotel, a dreamlike, allegorical comics offering with a nuanced use of colour to enhance atmosphere and mood. She has also published Witches be Bitches.
William Powers is the creator of the Wolverton-esque Space Wolf series. He also made use of the surrealist cut-up writing technique to bring to life the haunting zine Never Been Reborn which was launched on Small Press Day. His work was on offer on the Communal Table at SLCZF. Look for reviews of both Bethany and Will’s comics later this week at BF.
Join us on Thursday July 26th, then, for another fun evening of drinking, drawing and comics camaraderie. We kick off at 6.30pm in Gosh with a chance to get hold of signed comics and books from all our featured creators before moving over to The King’s Arms for 7. We look forward to seeing you then!
The Facebook event page for the night is here.
