PRIDE MONTH 2025! Although LGBTQIA coverage is a regular all year round part of our posting at BF, Pride Month is always extremely important to us as an even more dedicated celebration of our queer communities. This year, though, this month takes on even more importance. This year it feels as much about taking a stand against the world that surrounds us as it is does about celebrating.
Last year in our opening post for Pride Month 2024 I talked about the issues affecting our LGBTQIA siblings, saying: “Hard fought for rights like gay marriage and equal representation under the law are being attacked and eroded as right-wing populism once more exerts its sinister influence. The so-called “culture wars” continue to be stoked by malicious elements in the media and politics in a bid to other and alienate the marginalised. And, in particular, the unconscionable and vicious attacks on the rights of trans folk just to exist have become unrelenting in recent years.”
Little did I know just how much worse the situation would get by the time it came round to typing our annual Pride Month introduction this year. So, again, I’m going to repeat what I said last year because it feels infinitely more relevant in 2025 and, honestly, I don’t think I can regurgitate these words in any more a heartfelt way than I did then:
Within our own scene it is so vital that those of us can make sure our voices are heard in the pursuit of allyship. There must be no hiding place for homophobia in comics. No looking the other way when confronted with the transphobia that still permeates areas of comics commentary. And no platforming of anyone associated in any way with the hate groups that have sprung up to whine and mewl about diversity and inclusivity in the medium. Speaking up will continue to be part of our ethos as both a comics culture web-magazine and a small group of activists for the form, as outlined in our most recent mission statement here.
As long as Broken Frontier is here we will seek to live up to those sentiments. We will always stand with the LGBTQIA community. We will always do our utmost to proactively platform and amplify their voices and their stories. We will always be hear to support, champion and elevate them. And we will continue to add to our shareable list for LGBTQIA comics, and the dedicated one for trans and non-binary stories, which can be found on our Resource Lists page here on the site.
So once again through June we will be running reviews, short blog pieces and features for Pride. Look for articles marked Pride Month 2025 on the front page of BF. Remember too that if you’re a creator and you have a queer-themed comic that you would like to write an ‘Inside Look’ creator commentary on we are happy to run them. Details on what we’re looking for can be found here, and as long as you can get them to us by June 22nd at the latest we will make sure they go up in Pride Month.
Diversity, equity and inclusion are at the very heart of Broken Frontier’s ethos. And in these seemingly overwhelming times that is more crucial to us than ever. We’re here for you, we’re here for your stories and we’re here to be the best allies we can.
That’s not just a promise from us. It’s our commitment to you.
