Wonderful news here at Broken Frontier Towers as we celebrate the longlisting of 2024 Broken Frontier ‘Six to Watch’ artist Zhenyi Zheng in the 2025 World Illustration Awards in the category of Children’s Publishing. She follows other Six to Watch-ers Olivia Sullivan (2019), Alxndra Cook (2023) and Mereida Fajardo (2024) in receiving this recognition from the WIA.
Her longlisting is for the children’s story book My Little King and His Wonderland (sample page below) and you can see more examples from the book in her entry on the WIA site here. When we interviewed Zhenyi last year at Broken Frontier she said of it: “The story is an adventure in a fantasy world full of magical and extraordinary things, and finds his inner peace in the end. With fantasy and tenderness, this story softens the harshness of reality, easing the struggles of growing up with love and imagination.”
Zhenyi’s comics practice ranges from socially conscious commentary like Banana Trap through to the abstract experimentation of comics like Summer Maze (below). She currently has a new minicomic Good Day available as part of the LDComics Online Comics Fair. You can expect a review of that later this week at BF.
