This is, by now, a familiar story. Arts funding being hit hard is not a peculiarly British problem and, in their thirtieth anniversary year, Canadian publisher Conundrum Press have been hit especially hard. Indeed, they describe provincial government cuts this year as having “obliterated” their funding. Regular readers will remember that Conundrum Press became part of the Broken Frontier Hall of Fame in our most recent BF Awards when we pointed to “their socially conscious publishing output, minicomic bursaries for Black and indigenous creators, and their established commitments to marginalised voices” as being deserving of the recognition.
Publisher Andy Brown talks more about the specifics on the Conundrum Press Crowdfundr page here and goes into more depth about how you can help there. But in short there’s an amazing selection of book bundles from their back catalogue at discounts of 50%, plus the various formats for their Conundrum 25 pocketbook collections.
It’s a facile thing to say that it’s a tough time for comics publishing. It’s always a tough time for comics publishing. But outfits like Conundrum Press who have an established social purpose deserve our support now more than ever. For more details on their ethos and history you can read an interview with Conundrum’s Andy Brown here at Broken Frontier. You can also browse our review (more coming very soon!) and other coverage of Conundrum Press here on the site.
