Self-publishing and DIY culture is something we have always been very supportive of here at Broken Frontier with my own ‘Small Pressganged’ column having a focused role on the site in championing the very best in grassroots comics material. This Sunday 14th December sees the DIY Christmas Art Market come to London’s EPIC Dalston with a number of comics practitioners and micropublishers – including Tiny Pencil, Eyeball Comix, Avery Hill Publishing and Limehouse Comics – present among the cross-media mass of zinesters, illustrators and artists of all persuasions.
The event’s Facebook page describes the DIY Christmas Art Market as “a celebration of London’s emerging independent artists/makers, championing original/unique items, a market for lovers of all that is D.I.Y. and self-published. Come and discover a new wave of artists/makers, all exhibiting, and peddling their wares at an affordable price.”
“Items for sale will include, self-published publications, visual jazz, lo-tech ceramics, paintings, illustration, photography, origami, art prints, jewellery, hand puppets, zines, sewn items, space crafts, custom tees, outsider comic art, mixtapes, screen prints, records, artist books, clothing, odds, ends, and undefinables.”
Full details are available on the event’s aforementioned Facebook page with more information on the Hackney Flea Market site. The photos here are from previous Hackney Flea Market/DIY Art Market events emphasising that this should be a rather cool opportunity for some alternative Christmas shopping for this festive season!
