Bulgilhan Press have put out some fine experimental indie comics in the last few years, and it’s great to see them back with news of two new titles coming this month. Full details of The King’s Warrior and A Night to Ride the Day below. We also have this past BF interview with Bulgilhan Press’s Zach Clemente to remind you of just how good their past publishing output has been.
Bulgilhan Press to Publish A Brooding Dark Fantasy and A Gripping, Surrealist Drama After Successful Kickstarter
Bulgilhan Press successfully ran a Kickstarter campaign that saw a high demand after it reached 120% of its fundraising goal in June of this year. Now, the indie publisher is proud to present two graphic novel titles from two different authors to be published on 9/16/24: The King’s Warrior by Huahua Zhu and A Night to Ride the Day by Breeze Hu.
The King’s Warrior by Huahua Zhu is a brooding sword and sorcery comic where monsters roam the lands. A mighty Warrior in the service of a great King is charged with vanquishing the kingdom’s final threat, a powerful and evil alchemist. She promised that she would finally be freed alongside her brother once the deed was done, that her blade would not stop, and that the blood of beasts would run.
The King’s Warrior is a melancholy dark fantasy in the tradition of stories like Berserk by Kentaro Miura and the Dark Souls or Elden Ring video games.
A Night to Ride the Day by Breeze Hu is about a tired salesman and a grieving girl who meet by chance in a desert, each of them lost and alone in their waking dreams. Fate– or something like it – brings them together to navigate the maze-like city of Lynbo and unravel the truth of the past that’s haunting them. It is a magnificently kaleidoscopic comic that invites readers to join in on a feverish late-night journey to find the answer to the question, “Why continue?”
A Night Ride to the Day is a surrealist drama about coming to terms with one’s life and the world around them. It is reminiscent of stories like Drive My Car by Ryusuke Hamaguchi and Takamasa Oe as well as works by Satoshi Kon.
Praise for A Night Ride to the Day:
“Hu’s introspective color work and chunky brush asks me to sit with each panel and appreciate the emotional current coursing through its story. I couldn’t stop myself from slowing down to take in the heavy strokes, like looking up at the thunderous clouds of an Edgar Payne landscape, or find myself in awe of a page turn; to be met by the surreal color of an electric city, vibrating with people, vice, and mystery – kinda like Paprika in Vegas. Its characters, setting, and visual storytelling truly drew me into this very cinematic experience.”
