One of our Broken Frontier ‘Six to Watch’ creators back in 2017, Olivia Sullivan has continued to amaze us in the years since with work that is both poetical and abstract ever since. Her practice is always essential and she’s one of those creators who constantly pushes away the perceived boundaries of comics with her own unique vision.
We’ve reviewed many of her self-published comics and collaborations including Muscle Memory, Fried Milk, Escapades, Present.Tense, Substrata and numerous others, as well as recent work via outlets like Colossive Press and Strip for Me. She’s one of the most important practitioners of her generation in the UK in terms of pushing the form ever forward and taking it into new territories.
So I was delighted when I was informed some time back that she had been picked up by Avery Hill Publishing for her first full-length graphic novel Oracles. That news is now in the public arena with the pre-launch page for the Kickstarter for the book live and ready for you to sign up to here. It will officially launch in early 2026.
Oracles is described in the following terms:
A graphic novel journey through the wilderness to face the complications and complexities of grief and loss.
When the everyday becomes overwhelming, our protagonist begins to travel through the world to find wonder and a true escape—and to discover more about themself. As they navigate through the forest, the ocean, the desert, and the mountains in a trip of peace, turmoil and reflection, the narrator encounters mushrooms, sage creatures, whirlpools and learns more about themselves in the process. With gorgeous art and lyrical, contemplative text, this graphic novel is a passage from uncertainty to joy and understanding.
